Regular Dental Check-Ups

"Major" dental problems always start as much smaller problems.
Small problems + time = bigger problems.

Regular dental check-ups give us the opportunity to catch problems when they're small (and less expensive).

Learn what the American Dental Association has to say about regular dental check-ups.

Surprisingly Simple Food Tips for Healthy Teeth

Below is an excerpt from an article found on Colgate.com that was written by Donna Pleis

You already know the value of regular tooth brushing and flossing to the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease, but what you eat can help too. Here are a few tips for healthy teeth involving simple foods that may be more helpful to your dental health than you thought they were.

An Element of Strength
The mineral, fluoride, plays an important role in building strong teeth and bones, and ultimately protecting your teeth against tooth decay. This is why fluoride has been included in toothpastes like Colgate Cavity Protection and many community water supplies. But did you know it's also found naturally in many foods? Any fluoride you ingest is absorbed and distributed throughout the body, according to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), though most of it deposited into your bones and teeth.

So, to give you and your family's teeth an extra bit of strength now and then, serve up foods with naturally high concentrations of fluoride. Most seafood is a good source of this because oceans are full of natural sodium fluoride. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), tea and gelatin contain fluoride as well. Carrots, beets, canned pork and beans also have significant amounts (who would've thought?), as well as infant formula, juices, canned tomato products and cheeses. And if you like baked potatoes, don't peel off the skin; that's where most of the fluoride is found. You can identify more fluoride-rich foods at the USDA National Nutrient Database.

The remainder of the article details the following:

  • 'Moo're Dairy Please
  • Swish and Swallow
  • Candy and Chewing Gum
  • Nature's Toothbrush

Gum Disease Prevention

Don't let gum disease jeopardize your health, your smile, or your social life!

Whoopi Goldberg Speaks on Gum Disease
This just in!!! Gum disease can kill you? Maybe, but probably not.

Whoopi Goldberg talks about how gum disease has dramatically affected her own life and health on "The View":

Your gums and supporting bone are the foundation of your smile.

The most common reason for tooth loss today is periodontal (gum) disease. It is estimated that 80 percent of the adult population has some level of gum disease, ranging from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontal disease. Treatment can stop the progression of gum disease.

Gum disease is a silent killer of teeth (and perhaps more), as it is usually not painful. And, it's usually hidden from sight. It is an infection in your mouth. And, that's not good.

There are signs and symptoms you may be aware of including:
  • Bleeding gums - Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? Do you see blood when you rinse after brushing?
  • Pus oozing from your gums? Yes... Pus. Look closely.
  • Puffy, swollen, or red gums?
  • Bad breath?
  • Metallic or bad taste?
  • Loose teeth?
This insidious disease can wreak havoc on your social and professional life. It can cause receding gums and eventually tooth loss. We decided not to gross you out with photos on this topic!

Diabetes and Your Dental Health # 3

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. This month we are featuring information found on MouthHealthy.org that discuss how diabetes can affect  your dental health. Below is one way that diabetes can affect your oral health.

Slow Healing

Have you ever noticed a cold sore or a cut in your mouth that doesn’t quite seem to go away? This can be another way that diabetes may affect your mouth. Poor control of blood sugar can keep injuries from healing quickly and properly. If you have something in your mouth that you feel isn’t healing as it should, see your dentist.

How to Choose a Cosmetic Dentist in Palm Beach County

Porcelain Veneers case by Dr. Michael Barr
Pat had porcelain veneers to create
her Palm Beach Smile!  Click here
to read Pat's testimonial.
A great smile is always in fashion.  But, some of us were not born with a smile we love.  And, for some of us, time has caught up with our smiles.

Some need a little.  Some need a lot.

What it takes to create the smile you've dreamed of can vary quite a bit.  For some, it may be as straightforward as whitening and some touch-up bonding.  Others may need more involved treatment such as porcelain veneers and crowns.  In any case, finding the right dentist is important.

What is a Cosmetic Dentist?

If you look around, it seems every dentist is a "cosmetic dentist."  It's not a recognized specialty like orthodontics or oral surgery.  So, any dentist can make the claim.

How do you go about finding the right dentist for cosmetic treatment?  There are a few ways you can research the best cosmetic dentist for you.  Most dentists today have websites.  Though most of the websites are nothing more than a boilerplate / template website with "insert dentist name here."  Those same sites usually have "stock" before & after photos, which are simply bought or licensed photos.  If you look at enough dental websites, you'll see the same photos over and over.  These websites do not reflect the actual abilities of the dentist.

The proof is in the photos.

by Dr. Michael Barr.  Look for sharply-focused photos like
this one, so you can get a good idea of the dentist's results.
Click here to see Toni's story and before and after photos.
The first thing you should look for are before & after photos of actual cases done by the dentist.  A cosmetic dentist worth his or her salt will have photos of their own cases.  And, they should indicate that they are actual cases in the website.  To see actual cases done by Dr. Michael Barr at his Boynton Beach dental practice, click here.

On the other hand, if you are in consultation at the dentist's office, they should be able to show you photos of their own cases right there.  Are they quality photos with sharp focus and good lighting (so you can really see the results)?

No photos?  No deal!

Education and experience.

Diabetes and Your Dental Health # 2

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. This month we are featuring information found on MouthHealthy.org that discuss how diabetes can affect  your dental health. Below are two ways that diabetes can affect your oral health.

Change in Taste

Your favorite flavors might not taste as rich as your remember if you have diabetes. It can be disappointing, but take the opportunity to experiment with different tastes, textures and spices to your favorite foods. Just take care not to add too much sugar to your food in an effort to add flavor. Not only can this affect the quality of your diet, it can also lead to more cavities. If you have a persistent bad taste in your mouth, see your dentist or doctor.

Infections

Diabetes affects your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to infection. One common among people with diabetes is a yeast infection called oral thrush (candidiasis). The yeast thrive on the higher amount of sugar found in your saliva, and it looks like a white layer coating your tongue and the insides of your cheeks. Thrush is more common in people who wear dentures and can often leave a bad taste in your mouth. See your dentist if you think you have thrush or any other mouth infection.

Are the Invisible Braces from a "Club" the same as Invisalign or real braces from a dentist?

Buy Braces Direct!

You may have heard about getting invisible aligner type braces "direct" from an online company on TV or social media.  They imply that you can get the "same thing directly" without the dentist "middle-man."  Of course, the cost is less than you'd pay at a dental office.

The implication is that dentists are simply retailers of the aligners, and you are simply buying the product directly from the aligner company.  I understand the possible natural assumption that any criticism or defense from a dentist is self-serving or "protecting our turf."  I hope you'll indulge me for a few minutes and read on.

You shouldn't buy scalpels or Botox "direct," either.

Orthodontic aligner therapy is not a retail product.  It is a professional service.  The aligners are simply one of the tools used by dentists to straighten teeth.  Here at Palm Beach Smiles, there is much more to the Invisalign™ Treatment than simply handing the aligners over to the patient.  But, to preface what is involved in aligner therapy by a dentist, I want to point out how it is done with what I call "do-it-yourself braces" (DIY) available through online sources.

In order to receive the braces directly from the online retailer, you need only to send them self-administered dental impressions (molds) and some selfie photos of your smile and teeth. That's it.  No live examination by a dentist needed.  If you're "approved," you get your braces in the mail.

If a dentist, in any state in the U.S., provided any kind of orthodontic treatment, including aligners, with only impressions and cell phone photos as "diagnostic records," it would be a slam-dunk case of malpracticeSlam.  Dunk.

That should be enough information to end this article.  But, I'll continue to elaborate.

What could go wrong?

Orthodontic treatment (moving teeth) without a comprehensive dental examination, including x-rays and periodontal (gums - soft tissues and bony support) examination would rightfully be considered below the standard of care, because it would potentially place patients at significant risk.  For example, straightening teeth that have gum health issues can lead to worse gum problems and even tooth loss (see news report video below).  Teeth with cavities, bone loss, abscesses, impacted teeth, retained baby teeth, and other conditions should not be moved orthodontically until those issues are resolved.

Another significant negative outcome is a "posterior open bite."  This happens when the crowded teeth in front are straightened only by expanding the arch (without a dentist being DIRECTLY involved).  The resulting bite is that only the front teeth touch (and the back teeth don't).

Search YouTube for "s m i l e  d i r e c t  g o n e  w r o n g."

With DIY braces, those issues will not be known nor addressed.  This is dangerous and could result in significant damage.  Really.  It can.  The logical question that follows is, "Who is accountable?"

Why a dentist?

Beyond establishing the patient's dental health status, the dentist must also diagnose the orthodontic condition and then formulate a proper treatment plan.  The treatment plan includes which teeth will be moved, where, when, and how.  There is considerably more to it than taking impressions and applying the aligner trays.  For example, in many cases, the teeth are crowded due to "more teeth than space."  We need to create space.  This is often done by reshaping some of the teeth, progressively, throughout the treatment.  This doesn't happen with DIY braces.

Orthodontic aligner therapy in a dental office also usually includes critical "attachments" placed on the teeth.  These are temporary "buttons" bonded to the teeth so the aligners can make very precise movements of each tooth.   These attachments are often added at the very beginning of treatment.  But, they may also be changed or added during and throughout the course of treatment.  This doesn't happen with DIY braces.

In some cases, the treatment plan has to be modified to make "mid-course corrections."  Orthodontic aligner therapy must be monitored by the dentist (usually every six weeks).  None of this happens with DIY braces you get online.

While the mail-order / online company advertises that their aligner trays are "the same as what dentists use," you should know it is a VERY different material.  It's not the same thing.    Though, that is not really the point here.  They're not the same, but the material isn't important.  The key ingredient to orthodontic treatment is the dentist, not the appliance used.  With DIY braces, the actual professional service is absent.

Do your homework.

In my Boynton Beach Cosmetic & Family Dental practice, I offer Orthodontic Treatment to my patients who wish to have straight teeth and a more attractive smile, safely and effectively.  I would no more recommend DIY mail-order braces than I would DIY dental cleanings or DIY fillings.  Please be careful.  If you would like more information, click on Boynton Beach  Invisibile Braces Dentist.  Or give us a call at 561-736-2377.

Precision- Targeted Dental Anesthesia in Boynton Beach

  • "The dentist cant get my tooth numb."
  • "Local anesthetic doesn't work for me."

Does this describe you? Has painless dentistry eluded you? Have you had trouble or difficulty getting "numb" before? More often than not, its a lower molar that resists anesthesia. Here at Palm Beach Smiles, we are confident we can get any tooth numb. Dr. Barr has learned special techniques to get specific teeth numb comfortably and efficiently.
The technique actually uses less anesthetic and works very quickly. It also wears off more quickly after your treatment.

This technique does not involve putting you to "sleep." It is not sedation. It's best described as "precision-targeted anesthesia." Instead of using traditional "block" that makes the whole side of your face numb, Dr. Barr will gently numb just the tooth or teeth being treated, resulting in a painless experience.

Give us a call. We're on Boynton Beach Blvd., right off of I-95. So, we're conveniently located and easily reached from Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Lake Worth, and West Palm Beach.
